Mavis Thomson SRUA
Mavis Thomson was born in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, moving to Fermanagh after marriage. Presently living in Enniskillen. Mainly self taught as an artist Mavis is first known as a painter working mostly in watercolour, the landscape, seascape, buildings, and still life subjects being of main interest. Over the last twenty five years she has been making sculptural constructions and assemblages using driftwood yielded from the sea, with discarded timber elements and found objects in the manner of ‘art trouve’. These unique pieces have occasionally been accompanied by text. During the past couple of years Mavis has added the medium of collage to her work, and has recently completed a series of Japanese collages produced on hand made paper mounted on canvas, with acrylics. Mavis has had several solo shows, and has exhibited widely in many group exhibitions, receiving numerous awards and commissions. Her work is held in collections including Fermanagh County Museum, Enniskillen Castle, The Derek Hill Collection, Donegal, The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Co. Monaghan, The University of Limerick, The Consul General, Iceland, The Masumi Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, Senator Hillary Clinton, Washington D.C., The Office of Public Works, Dublin, and The Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Diploma Collection. Mavis was elected A.R.U.A in 1986. She is a member of the Ulster Water Colour Society, The Water Colour Society of Ireland, The Ulster Society of Women Artists, and The Turner Society, London.
